Turkish seismic vessel heads to Somalia for oil and gas exploration
Turkey dispatched its seismic research vessel Oruc Reis in Somalia following the oil and gas cooperation agreement signed earlier this year. This is the ship's first intercontinental mission since it was commissioned in 2017, significantly increasing Turkey's exploration capabilities. At a ship departure ceremony on Saturday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the exploration mission would involve carrying out seismic activities in three areas where Turkey has obtained licenses off the coast of Somalia. Each block covers an area of approximately 1,930 square miles.
“The Somali region, associated with conflict and instability for decades, will now be on the path to economic development following the findings of Oruc Reis” added Erdogan.
The ship is expected to reach Somali waters later this month. The seismic surveys will last seven months and the data collected will help identify potential oil and gas drilling sites. Furthermore, Oruc Reis is escorted by two Turkish naval frigates. Indeed, this is a decisive moment for Turkey's influence and presence in the Horn of Africa.
The region is currently experiencing tensions, particularly as Ethiopia pushes for access to the Red Sea via Somaliland, a breakaway state from Somalia. This has seen Mogadishu intensify its defense ties with countries including Egypt and Turkey. Somalia's defense deal with Turkey provides for naval support, meaning access to one of Africa's vast coastlines. Somalia has the longest national coastline in Africa, stretching 1,880 miles.
According to 2D seismic studies carried out by TGS in 2024, Somalia could have at least 30 billion barrels of oil and gas reserves spread across the 15 blocks initially proposed by the government. With most of its energy resources unexplored, Somalia remains the last frontier of global oil and gas exploration.
But with Turkey's entry into the sector, it is likely to attract interest from other international oil and gas multinationals. Chevron, Eni and ExxonMobil were exploring in Somalia as early as the 1950s, but had to leave when civil war broke out in 1991.
Somalia adopted regulations for offshore oil and gas licensing in 2022. The law also provided a revenue sharing framework between companies and the government. Turkey already has a head start in oil and gas development in Somalia, and it remains to be seen how it will leverage this opportunity for its geopolitical interests in the Indian Ocean.
