The USGS wants to hear from those who felt the Loma Prieta earthquake

Thirty-five years after the 6.9 Loma Prieta earthquake underscored our vulnerability to catastrophic seismic movement, the USGS wants to hear from those who witnessed it.

The USGS had not yet created its website entitled “Did You Feel It?” Feature When the October 17, 1989 earthquake reawakened residents to the dangers of living in a state full of faults and shattered residents' complacency throughout California. But the federal agency hopes it's not too late to capture the memories of those who felt the quake when it struck that fall day at 5:04 p.m., killing 63 people and causing up to $6.8 billion in damage.

The reporting tool helps the USGS collect information about the distribution of tremors from individual earthquakes and helps geologists better understand them, geophysicist Susan Hogue told reporters during a virtual news conference on Tuesday.

It is also useful in predicting the effects of future earthquakes, guiding emergency responses, building codes and other efforts to save lives and preserve property.

With the 35th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake next week, the USGS thought it was a good time to ask the public about what they experienced.

“Anniversary dates for devastating earthquakes are a reminder that we live in earthquake country,” Christine Goulet, director of the USGS Earthquake Science Center, said in a written statement. “The USGS recognizes the tremendous impact Loma Prieta has had on individuals and organizations. Although 1989 was a long time ago, we still see the importance of gathering residents' input from their experience at that time. This will better support knowledge and preparedness plans.”

The quake was centered about 10 miles northeast of Santa Cruz, and proved devastating to the port city and the South Bay and San Francisco areas, especially in the Marina District, where ground liquefaction collapsed buildings and ruptured a gas main, igniting fires.

A 50-foot median section of the upper deck of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge collapsed, killing one person, and in Oakland, the double-decker Interstate 880 Cypress Structure collapsed during rush hour, killing 42 people. On that day. And many others were injured.

It was the most destructive quake since the historic 1906 San Francisco earthquake, which struck with an estimated magnitude of 8.0, much stronger than the Loma Prieta quake and far more deadly.

Although structural damage was largely in southern Sonoma County, more than 11,500 responses have already been submitted to the question “Did you feel it?” The US Geological Survey said it reflects tremors that occurred from southern California to Oregon.

The tool includes a questionnaire that can now be answered in Spanish and Chinese, in addition to English.

USGS staff also suggested residents use Anniversary to make sure they set up the ShakeAlert early warning system and fully enable their phones for notifications.

Although small earthquakes may not trigger an alert, large earthquakes should give enough time for people to fall, take cover, and hold on to avoid or minimize injury.
