A school that denied sick leave related to menstrual pain unless parents provided “relevant medical information” has reversed its policy.

Neil Wade Academy in Cambridgeshire announced in March that, following further guidance from the government, a doctor's note would no longer be required for absences due to menstrual pain.

The school's original policy was criticized on social media, with one woman saying her endometriosis, which causes painful periods, was only diagnosed in her 40s.

Principal Graham Horne said in an email to parents that he “deeply regrets the concerns” the school's policy has caused.

Menstrual pain is also listed as an unacceptable term unless medical information is provided.

Fines are typically £80 if paid within 21 days and £160 if paid within 28 days.

In his latest email to parents, seen by the BBC, Mr Horne said he was aware of concerns within the school community “about the need to provide medical information to support absenteeism”. said.

Mr Horne said the school recognized the pressure on local GPs, the difficulty in getting an appointment and the difficulty in obtaining a medical diagnosis for some symptoms.
