TIMOTHEUS CHALAMET pulled off some major mid-century attacks on the set of his new movie Marty Supreme. Who was Marty Supreme?

The film is loosely based on the late American table tennis legend Martin 'Marty' Reisman.

Known as “the Needle” because of his slight build, Reisman was a fixture on the Lower East Side and downtown Manhattan for his quick wit and penchant for losing his fortune (he was a three-time millionaire) on betting, just as fast as he. she could make. The son of a taxi driver, Reisman was born and raised in Manhattan, where he entered the world of table tennis at the age of nine and quickly earned the title of junior champion at the age of thirteen.

Always a real hustler, Reisman started betting from the age of 11 and then set his sights on bigger prizes in international competitions where he won several bronze medals. But it was in 1958 and 1960 that Reisman became the U.S. men's singles champion. He later created a job in New York City, where he gathered celebrities to compete in prizefights (yes, you read that right too).

During his lifetime, Reisman won 22 major table tennis championships, including two US Opens and a British Open. He died in 2012 at the age of 82.

• Timothe Chalamet plays Martin 'Marty' Reisman. Chalamet's casting seems appropriate for the titular role, whose light, lean physique bodes well for Reisman's nickname, “the Needle.”

Indie-American filmmaker Josh Safdie directs the film.

Uncut gemstones (2019) was Safdie's last major project, which he co-directed with brother Benny Safdie. Born in New York, the filmmaker's oeuvre consistently focuses on the subcultures that form the social fabric of the city.

Ronald Bronstein wrote the script together with Safdie. The two work together regularly; Bronstein also co-wrote Uncut gemstones.
