Mel Stride disagrees with Boris Johnson over ECHR referendum – but says he will support Tories…

Mel Stride is “110 per cent determined” to support the winner of the Tory leadership race as he insisted “our real enemy is the Labor Party”.

Speaking to Lewis Goodall on Sunday, Shadow Work & Pensions refused to say which Conservative candidate it would support, admitting it “hasn't decided yet”.

However, he admitted he was at odds with former Prime Minister and Conservative MP Boris Johnson when it came to holding a referendum on leaving the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).

His comments come as Conservative leadership candidates Robert Jenrick and Kemi Bandenoch prepare to face off as they attempt to lead the party.

It comes as Robert Jenrick revealed he plans to appoint Jacob Reese-Mogg as leader of the Conservative Party if he wins the contest.

The shadow work and pensions secretary backed his party, telling Lewis “we have two very strong candidates”.

Admit “Robert [Jenrick] has been very strong and very firm on the issue of the ECHR”, Mr Stride stressed the importance of “bringing the parliamentary party to your side” when it comes to key issues like human rights.

It comes as fellow Conservative MP Sir David Davis spoke out strongly about Jenrick's plans to leave the ECHR.
