Island communities conduct earthquake drills Thursday

Communities on Vancouver Island will be able to practice earthquake safety through a BC-wide exercise this week.

It's called The Great BC ShakeOut, and it focuses on getting residents across British Columbia to learn how to stay safe in the event of an earthquake.

British Columbia is the most seismically active province in Canada, with thousands of small earthquakes occurring each year, according to ShakeOut BC. ShakeOut are the organizers of the annual training.

They say for practice, in the event of a real earthquake, you should land, cover and hold steady if you are in your home during the shaking.

If you're outside, find a clear spot in your neighborhood away from trees, street lights, buildings and power lines before exercising.

If you are driving, they ask you to pull over, stop and keep your seat belt fastened until the shaking stops.

This year's drills are scheduled to take place on October 17, with many communities on the island and coast holding drills on that day.

In the Comox Valley, schools including Miracle Beach Elementary hold their practices between 9:45 and 10 a.m.

For Campbell River, they are doing a self-guided drill between 10:17 and 10:24 a.m

For the Sunshine Coast, the Nanaimo Regional District will have facilities in the area to conduct training, with buses stopping to participate. VIU will hold its practice at the Nanaimo campus at 9:45 a.m

Practice will begin at 10:17 a.m. that day.
