New Chinese Ambassador to Indonesia arrives in Jakarta – Asia and the Pacific
China's ambassador-designate Wang Lutong arrived in Jakarta on Saturday with a mission to foster bilateral relations with the country which he described as Beijing's strategic partner and a “key member of ASEAN”.
“I will do my best to deepen our friendship, strengthen our cooperation,” he said upon his arrival in Jakarta on Saturday evening, quoted in an embassy press release.
Wang said he would also strive to “write a new chapter in the comprehensive strategic partnership between China and Indonesia.”
The two countries transformed their strategic partnership into a comprehensive strategic partnership in 2013.
Wang was recently named by Chinese President Xi Jinping as the country's 14th president.th ambassador to Indonesia. Wang, who was previously director-general of European affairs at the Chinese Foreign Ministry and Chinese ambassador to New Zealand, has yet to present his credentials to the Indonesian government.
Wang noted that under Presidents Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Xi Jinping, relations between Jakarta and Beijing were operating “at a high level”, cooperation had “achieved fruitful results” and people-to-people exchanges had intensified.
China has spent billions of dollars in Indonesia under the Belt and Road infrastructure initiative and in the development of downstream metallurgical industries such as the nickel smelting industry, as well as in the tourism and the manufacturing of electric vehicles.
