The Pentagon announced on Sunday that it would send an air defense system and around 100 American troops to operate it.

President Biden asked Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to send the High Altitude Area Defense Terminal battery and crew to Israel, Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Ryder said in a statement .

This deployment comes after two direct Iranian missile attacks against Israel, on April 13 and October 1. Israel has yet to respond to the latest missile attack.

This action underscores the United States' unwavering commitment to the defense of Israel and the defense of Americans in Israel against any further ballistic missile attacks from Iran,” Ryder said in the statement.

The move brings U.S. troops closer to a growing and ongoing military conflict in the Middle East.

The United States had already sent the THAAD system to Israel for training in 2019 as well as shortly after the October 7 Hamas attack that left around 1,200 people dead.

Separately, the Trump administration ordered parts of the THAAD from South Korea in 2017 to counter North Korean missile attacks. At the time, China opposed the deployment, saying the system's radar could provide a new way to spy on its military and that THAAD missiles could weaken China's nuclear deterrent.
