Decades ago, when I was a little kid, I was playing with neighborhood friends in the front yard. Suddenly the ground shook. It took a few seconds, but it was enough to qualify as my first experience with earthquakes. (Also, after I dug up dirt roads in the yard for my Matchbox and Hot Wheels cars, I was thrilled that my toy traffic got to experience that, too.)

In fact, this was probably my only experience with earthquakes. In the early 2000s – or perhaps the late 2000s – there was another tremor that produced something noticeable on the Richter scale. But it was in the pre-dawn hours, and I was sound asleep; I didn't feel it.

And the fact that the Tri-State is located within walking distance of what is considered a major fault line – the New Madrid Fault – our “activity” has been on the light side. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be prepared. Action plans should always be ready in the event of a disaster, even if it is as rare as an earthquake.
