USC and SCEC seismologists are available for interviews

On Thursday, October 17 at 10:17 a.m., Great ShakeOut participants will learn how to protect themselves from earthquakes. In its 16th year, the event will attract millions of participants from around the world who will participate in readiness exercises with their schools, businesses, nonprofits, government agencies, neighborhoods and other organizations.

In addition to housing the California Statewide Earthquake Center (SCEC), USC includes experts from many related disciplines. USC and SCEC experts are available for interviews about earthquakes, on topics ranging from the physics behind ground movements to the financial ramifications of natural disasters.

Sylvain Barbeau is an expert in geophysics (how pieces of land move), especially why and how earthquakes occur. It also studies the Earth's movement from space using satellites. He is an associate professor of geosciences in the USC Dornsife College of Letters, Arts and Sciences.
