Expert explains why Tennesseans should practice earthquake drills

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — When you think of Tennessee, you don't usually think of earthquakes. But the Volunteer State owns them.

Thursday marks the Great Aftershock, with millions of people around the world participating in earthquake drills at work, school or home.

Steve Bessemer of the Mid-U.S. Earthquake Association joined FOX 17 News to explain why earthquake drills are so important to Tennesseans.

“In Tennessee, there is definitely the potential for strong earthquakes,” Bessemer explained.

He says earthquakes are already being felt and occurring in the Carolinas, affecting East Tennessee residents. There is also a seismic zone in West Tennessee that has been shown to have seen some of the largest earthquakes ever to occur in the continental United States, according to Bessemer.

“We don't get that kind of warning for earthquakes like we do for other events like hurricanes or tornadoes. Earthquakes don't get any warning at all.

How should Tennesseans prepare for such an unusual event?

Bessemer says residents should practice “drop, cover and hold” drills for protection and injury prevention.

“If you're in an area where you can get down, get down on your knees. Cover up — especially the back of your head and neck area. Then if you have something to hold on to while the shaking is happening, hold on to it until the shaking stops.”
