Doug Gibbons, a research engineer with the Pacific Northwest Seismic Network, explained the unexpected nature of the quakes.

“In the Yakima area, there is a series of fault lines trending east to west that can produce medium to large magnitude earthquakes. That has not happened in the historical past, but we know they are capable of it,” Gibbons said.

The network has detected small earthquakes near Hanford recently, although they were too minor to be felt. The most notable earthquake in recent years on Washington's East Side was a magnitude 4 earthquake in 2015.

Earthquakes are not common on the eastern side of the state, but it is still important to prepare for the worst.

“I know earthquakes don't happen very often, but it's good to be prepared for them when they do happen,” Sadro said. “So it's really good to learn what you need to prepare for ahead of time. So when it does happen, you're just ready to go.”
