35 years later, the Loma Prieta earthquake was remembered at a Cal Academy event

Bay Area residents remember where they were 35 years ago when the Loma Prieta earthquake rocked the Bay Area, causing 63 deaths and an estimated $6 billion in property damage.

On Thursday night, the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco held an event to reflect on a tragic but important moment in Bay Area history.

While images of the World Series at Candlestick Park, the damaged Bay Bridge, and the flat Cypress Expressway in Oakland are vividly stored in people's minds, so are memories of where they were when the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck on October 17, 1989.

“I was doing back-to-school shopping with my mom and sister,” Bay Area resident Kat Chen said. “We were at the local Long's Drugs store on the Peninsula. We were in line to get signs. I'm 6 years old, bored. Then the ground shook. We thought it was a truck outside. Then everything literally flew off the shelves.”

“I was at day care after school,” said Richie Lipton, an employee at the California Academy of Sciences. “Actually, the San Francisco Jewish Community Center and I were under a table at the community center.”

Lipton was only 7 years old when the earthquake struck.

“October 17 is a significant date in the history of the Gulf region because of the earthquake, the Battle of the Gulf, and the Giants in the World Series,” he said. “Epic. Probably never again.”

Lipton, a production major at Cal Academy, came up with the idea of ​​naming this week's Thursday nightlife event “Hella 89” to reflect on the Loma Prieta earthquake. Among all the exhibits, people got the chance to safely experience 6.9-magnitude tremors in the academy's Shake House, almost like what they felt 35 years ago.

“I remember the building swaying back and forth and everyone was screaming and getting under the table,” Lipton said. “The kids were crying. It's there forever.”

Bay Area residents have heard for years that the next big thing is just around the corner. But the Loma Prieta experience has changed the way some view and deal with future earthquakes.

“Since then, we've had a number of big earthquakes, but I feel like we've become hardened to them now,” Lipton said. “The running joke with San Franciscans is that we don't get out of bed for less than a 5.0. It doesn't scare us anymore.”
