Pakistan: Imran Khan's party declares boycott of vote on constitutional amendments due to internal concerns

Islamabad [Pakistan]October 20: Imran Khan-led Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said it would abstain from participating in voting on constitutional amendments in both legislative houses, according to ARY News.

The PTI Political Committee, in an official statement, said that the committee has also decided to protest against PTI members in the National Assembly and Senate who are participating in the voting process. The PTI political committee has asserted that the currently ruling group does not have the moral, democratic or constitutional legitimacy to amend the constitution. The commission stressed that PTI members elected on the party list to the Senate and National Assembly are required to follow party policy and directives of the party leader.

Additionally, the committee warned that peaceful protests would be held outside the homes of those who deviate from the party's policies.

In a surprising announcement, the PTI expressed concerns that two of its senators might support constitutional amendments contrary to party policy. Lawyer Gohar Khan, PTI president, said it had been brought to their attention that the party's two senators, Zarqa Taimur and Faisal Saleem, were expected to vote against the party's position.

In another update, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar announced that the draft constitutional package would be presented to the federal cabinet today for formal approval.

Addressing the media in Islamabad alongside Information and Broadcasting Minister Attaullah Tarar, he mentioned that JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman's proposals had been incorporated into the project.

The Justice Minister said he had briefed the Federal Cabinet on the detailed discussions regarding the constitutional amendment and noted that the positions of allied parties were also shared during the Cabinet meeting.

On Saturday, after a series of meetings at the residence of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman in Islamabad, and the delayed start of the National Assembly and Senate sessions, the presentation constitutional amendments the project was postponed until today.

Fazlur Rehman's residence was a focal point on Saturday, attracting visits from Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and leaders of various political parties, including Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan's lawyer, and Balochistan National Party (Mengal) leader Akhtar Mengal.
