US investigates apparent leak of 'top secret' US documents relating to Israel

US officials are investigating the apparent leak of two top-secret US documents that show US intelligence agencies tracking possible Israeli preparations to carry out an attack on Iran, three US officials said.

Both documents bear markings indicating they are Top Secret. The title of one of the documents reads: Israel: Air Force continues preparations for strike against Iran, conducts second large-force exercise on October 15-16, 2024 .

The second document is titled National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, the name of the US spy agency specializing in the analysis of satellite images and other intelligence sources.

The title of the document reads: The Israeli Defense Forces continued key munitions preparations and covert drone activity almost certainly in preparation for a strike against Iran on October 16, 2024, referring to unmanned aerial vehicles , or drones.

The text of the documents says: We cannot predict with certainty the size and scope of a strike against Iran, and such a strike may occur without further warning from GEOINT.

It also says that Israel appears to have dispersed its medium-range ballistic missiles, or MRBMs, as a defensive measure to protect them from an Iranian attack and that there is no indication that Israel plans to carry out a nuclear attack against Iran.

The dispersal of MRBMs is almost certainly defensive, the document states. We have not observed any indication that Israel intends to use nuclear weapons.

The apparent leak of two documents comes after Jack Teixeira, a member of the Massachusetts Air National Guard, pleaded guilty in March to posting a trove of top-secret documents on the social media app Discord. The leak was seen as a deeply damaging security breach and led to calls for the intelligence community to do much more to prevent leaks.
