Trump and Harris exchange fierce attacks on the battlefield

Trump and Harris exchange fierce attacks on the battlefield

Watch: Moment Donald Trump makes fries at McDonald's

Kamala Harris and Donald Trump stepped up personal attacks against each other as the White House rivals bombarded battleground states 16 days before the election.

In Pennsylvania, Trump served fries at a McDonald's as he sought to cast doubt on Harris' biographical details about her work at a fast food chain decades ago.

The US vice president was in Georgia, where she tweeted that Trump was exhausted, unstable and unfit to be president of the United States.

Polls show the two men are engaged in a tight race across the country, including in the seven battleground states that could swing the election.

Speaking Sunday afternoon in traditionally Republican-leaning Lancaster County, Trump focused heavily on the economy and immigration — issues that his campaign says give him an advantage with undecided voters.

“If you look at the polls, the most important thing is the economy,” he said. “But I think that [the border] is bigger than the economy…it's the first thing people want to talk about.”

Earlier in the day, Trump visited a McDonald's in Feasterville-Trevose, a Philadelphia suburb, where he learned how to make fries, dipping the wire basket in sizzling oil and serving drive-thru meals.

The restaurant itself was closed to sit-down diners during Trump's visit.

“I love this job,” said the Republican, himself a fan of Big Macs and Filet-o-Fish sandwiches.

He again accused Harris of “lying” about working at a fast food chain.

“I have now worked [at McDonalds] for 15 minutes longer than Kamala,” Trump said.

Harris spokesman Ian Sams told the BBC that Trump's move was a sign of desperation.

“All he knows how to do is lie,” he told the BBC. “He can't understand what it's like to have a summer job because he was handed millions on a silver platter, only to have it blow.”

The campaign added that the vice president worked the cash register, ice machine and French fry machine at a McDonald's on Central Avenue in Alameda, California, during the summer of 1983.

McDonald's placed an ad in the 1983 edition of a local high school yearbook, with photos showing some students who worked there at the time.

The BBC spoke to one of the students in the photos, who said he remembered many of the people who worked alongside him at the restaurant more than 40 years ago, although he didn't remember Kamala Harris was one of them.

The New York Times, however, spoke with Harris' high school friend, Wanda Kagan, who said she remembered the current vice president working at McDonald's at that time.

Georgia Church Sings Happy Birthday to Kamala Harris on Her 60th Birthday

On Sunday, Harris celebrated her 60th birthday and gave an interview to MSNBC, whose host asked her about Trump's remark at a rally in Latrobe, Pa., on Saturday that she was a “[expletive] vice-president”.

Harris said Trump's language “demeans the office” of the presidency. “He has not earned the right” to be president again, she added.

Earlier in the day, she asked a congregation of black churchgoers near Atlanta, Georgia, to vote against the chaos, fear and hatred personified, she suggested, by her Republican rival. On Saturday, she told a rally in the city that Trump was cruel.

Meanwhile, Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX who campaigned for Trump, has pledged to give $1 million a day to voters who sign his petition in support of the US Constitution.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said the project was very concerning and that law enforcement should eventually look into the issue.

The crowd at Trump's town hall-style event in Lancaster on Sunday was largely receptive to his remarks.

But one of the participants, Jordan Ashby, told the BBC he was undecided and was awaiting final arguments from both candidates.

“I really don’t know yet,” the Lancaster resident said when asked how he would vote. “I have family on both sides of the fence. It's a tough time right now.”

Other attendees told the BBC they were drawn to Trump's promises to secure the US-Mexico border and reduce inflation.

“[Inflation] That’s what I see a lot in my daily life, especially with the price of gas and the prices of groceries,” said Brennan Zeyak, an 18-year-old student voting for the first time this year.

Both candidates will continue their final presentations on Monday.

Harris will begin a whirlwind tour of Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin on Monday.

Trump will visit the hurricane-hit city of Asheville, North Carolina, before holding a rally in the city of Greenville.
