1729523513How can storms affect mental health?
Storm Ashley has created a frenzy in the news over the past few days, causing flooding, power outages and travel problems in parts of the UK.
Extreme weather events like these often increase anxiety and stress and can have a significant impact on mental health.
The drama of floods and lightning can be scary, so PA spoke to an expert who explains why storms affect us so much and what we can do to deal with them.
How does stormy weather affect people's mood and behavior?
The weather can have a real impact not only on how we feel in the moment, but also on how we perceive the day and beyond, explains Dr Rachael Molitor, chartered psychologist and lecturer at Coventry University. Sunlight has a positive effect on mood due to its pleasant associations, so dark, rainy and dreary weather can have the opposite effect.
Media coverage of extreme weather events can also exacerbate these feelings.
With so much media coverage of storms involving flooding, property damage, weather or warnings of danger to life, we are inundated with negative discussions about storms, leading to negative moods and, consequently, changes in behavior, psychologists say. .
The unpredictability of storms can exacerbate stress, fear, and anxiety.
