Lawmakers call on State Department to publicly condemn Turkey's Erdoan
A bipartisan group of House lawmakers is stepping up its criticism of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan, calling on the administration to publicly condemn Erdoan's provocative comments and actions against Israel.
Erdoan has openly and repeatedly sided with Hamas since October 7 and even threatened to invade Israel. Lawmakers have repeatedly expressed concerns about his activities and threatened sanctions, but this letter presents their most explicit demand for consequences for Erdoan's provocations.
Although allies often disagree, Erdoan's recent conduct has undermined U.S. efforts to combat global terrorism, the lawmakers wrote in a letter to Secretary of State Tony Blinken on Wednesday. As democracy is under attack around the world, it is crucial that allies join those on the front lines fighting authoritarianism and strongly condemn any undemocratic conduct that violates our shared values. We urge the administration to publicly condemn President Erdoan's rhetoric and actions that undermine support for key allies abroad, particularly Israel.
The lawmakers said Erdoan's activities have continued since July, when they previously sent a letter saying the United States should reassess its relationship with Turkey if Erdoan does not change course.
Erdo's promotion of harmful, undemocratic policies and alignment with the Axis of Evil is straining U.S.-Turkey relations, lawmakers said. If this trend continues, the United States should consider steps to ensure that Turkey meets its obligations under the North Atlantic Treaty.
They said NATO must remain unified, but Erdo's recent anti-Israel rhetoric and sympathy toward Russia cannot be ignored.
Lawmakers accused the Turkish president of undermining U.S. security interests, playing directly into the hands of authoritarians while rejecting U.S. and European priorities, and deepening divisions within NATO.
They specifically highlighted Turkish leaders' threat to block NATO partnerships with Israel, which lawmakers say would block essential technology and intelligence sharing.
They also criticized him for seeking to join the BRICS group alongside many U.S. adversaries, which lawmakers say poses obvious conflicts and security concerns, and for siding with Russia and Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in opposition to American priorities.
