Evolution of hockey on display at The Henry Ford
Ice hockey fans can see the sport in a new way in The Henry Fords' latest exhibition: HOCKEY: Faster Than Ever, on view now until January 5. The exhibition explores how the sport has evolved since it was first played in the late 19th century and includes a combination of historical memorabilia, scientific explanations and interactive activities. It also offers additional hockey-themed films and meet-and-greets with local hockey teams.
It's about the history and current status of hockey as a sport and cultural phenomenon, says Kate Morland, head of exhibitions and performance at The Henry Fords.
The traveling exhibition is produced by Flying Fish in collaboration with the Montreal Science Center and support from the National Hockey League and the National Hockey League Players' Association. The Detroit exhibit also includes memorabilia borrowed from the Detroit Red Wings and USA Hockey.
Highlights include jerseys and gear worn by Detroit Red Wings star players including Dylan Larkin, Moritz Seider and The Russian Five, as well as signs from Joe Louis Arena, home of the Red Wings from 1979 to 2017. It also features by-game gear worn by Kirsten Simms and Megan Keller, Michigan residents who play for the United States National Ice Hockey Team, including their jerseys from the 2024 International Ice Hockey Federation Women's World Championship.
Simms and Keller are part of a section highlighting women in hockey.
Women have played hockey since the beginning, Morland said. We have some historical photos of women who played in the 19th century, so we want to make sure people are aware that it's not just the NHL that are professional hockey players.
Visitors can also view historic skates and equipment that show their evolution from the 19th and 20th centuries.
On a scientific level, viewers can learn about the physics of the game and the technological advancements of the sport, including how it has been adapted to increase accessibility and adapted for the Paralympic Games and the Special Olympics.
Interactive elements of the exhibition offer visitors the opportunity to test their own hockey talent. In Need for Speed, participants practice their slapshot skills and compete against their friends for speed. Don't Blink tests reflexes by challenging guests to hit as many lights as possible in one minute, and Score Like a Pro allows participants to practice hitting pucks into goals. With a less competitive interactive element, users can get up close and personal with The Stanley Cup on a touchscreen.

To complement the exhibition, the museum will present hockey-themed films Inside Out from November 2-3 and Miracle from December 13 in their Giant Screen Experience theater. They are also hosting events with the University of Michigan women's hockey team on November 16 and the Special Olympics on November 17, with more programming to come.
This exhibit is for hockey fans, of course, but it's really for anyone who just wants to get out and play some fun, Petrelius said. If you're not interested in hockey, find out a little more about it and if you really love hockey, this is the place to come in and fully immerse yourself.
