Dozens of US lawmakers pressure Pakistan to release former Prime Minister Imran Khan

ISLAMABAD

More than 60 lawmakers in the US Congress have urged President Joe Biden to pressure Pakistan to release all political prisoners, including incarcerated former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In a detailed letter to Biden on Wednesday, the lawmakers expressed concerns about the human rights situation in the South Asian country and said elections held earlier this year saw a “level history of irregularities.

“The elections were marked by historic irregularities, including widespread electoral fraud, state-led efforts to disenfranchise voters in favor of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (Movement for Freedom) Justice or PTI), the arrest and detention of a large number of political leaders, journalists and activists, and the continued detention of former Prime Minister Imran Khan,” he said.

The PTI also accused the country's election authorities of rigging and altering the results, which the latter later dismissed as false allegations.

Lawmakers urged Biden to use considerable U.S. influence with the Pakistani government to secure the release of political prisoners, including Khan, and reduce widespread human rights abuses.

“What explains the delay in announcing visa bans and/or asset freezes for Pakistani elites implicated in human rights abuses, and what is the timeline for these decisions,” the lawmakers asked President Biden in their letter.

They also called on the United States to take action against Pakistani officials who have violated democratic principles and human rights in the country.

Khan, 72, is however currently imprisoned in Rawalpindi and is seeking bail in several cases ranging from corruption to terrorism, all of which he denies. The courts have already overturned two of his convictions and suspended a third. His party accused the government of barring Khan from meeting his lawyers and family members since October 3.

The Islamabad High Court on Thursday sought the physical presence of Imran Khan, ordering the police to produce the former prime minister before it later in the afternoon.

The former cricket star was ousted from power in a vote of no confidence in April 2022.
