Durfee's Curran stands alone in the hockey record books
Kacey Curran didn't understand the importance of hockey knowledge as a young student at Frank M. Silvia Elementary School.
Terry Pacheco, who set the all-time record for goals scored in a hockey playing career at Durfee High School, was Curran's fourth- and fifth-grade gym teacher. Curran didn't realize she would eventually break her all-time record.
“I've heard stories about her playing hockey,” Curran said. “I never really took it seriously because I loved ice hockey. Now that I'm breaking (the record), I love field hockey a lot more than ice hockey.”
Curran recently broke a 31-year-old school record set by Pacheco, who scored 70 career goals for the Hilltoppers. Pacheco had 30 goals and 11 assists in her junior year, then added 26 goals and 19 assists in her senior year in 1993.
“It was a really good feeling,” Curran smiled.
Curran's record season doesn't stop there. On Wednesday against Dartmouth, the four-year Durfee player continued her 2024 success by breaking the 36-goal single-season mark set by Kathryn Gauvin as a freshman in 2021. Curran currently has 38 goals on the year and 78 career goals.
“We joked about her getting close to the record and being able to break it,” Hilltopper head coach Nicki Henrique said. “I said, 'I think you can get there.' She has been a force this year and teams are double teaming with her. I feel like she has that confidence this year and has taken on the leadership role as a senior.”
Curran said she couldn't have done it without her teammates.
“All my goals come from assists,” she said. “Last Saturday they knew how close I was and they all supported me and tried to get me the ball. Without them I wouldn't have been able to do this.”
Curran's skating journey began at the age of 7. She attended some hockey clinics and camps, but didn't take the sport seriously until eighth grade. From there she competed in the Baystate Games.
She played as a forward for the Bishop Stang girls hockey team with her older sister, Emily. Curran said the adjustment from ice hockey to field hockey posed a challenge for her
“It was more of a transition for me than it was for my sister because I was always left-handed in hockey,” she said. “In hockey there are only right sticks. But once I adapted to it, it went fine.”
Curran has had some training as an ice hockey player, but now the sudden stardom in hockey has changed her outlook.
“I've talked to a few schools, but I'm not sure what I want to do yet,” Curran said. “I always wanted to go south and play hockey there. But now I'm conflicted, but I'm keeping all my options open.”
Now Curran is preparing for her final ride into the sunset with the Big 3 championship. The Hilltoppers hope to make a deep run in the postseason this fall.
“I feel like when we're locked in and working as a team, we're a solid group,” she said.
