Trkiye reaffirms fight against terrorism after security talks
President Recep Tayyip Erdoan chaired a high-level security meeting in Istanbul on Thursday after a terrorist attack on a major Turkish defense and aerospace company killed five people.
The talks at Atatrk airport took place as Erdoan returned from Kazan, Russia, where he attended a summit of the BRICS developing economy bloc.
The officials discussed the deadly attack on the Turkish Aerospace Industry (TAI) headquarters and the country's fight against terrorism, according to a statement from the Communications Directorate.
They reiterated Trkiye's commitment to the fight against terrorism and stressed that the country will not allow the establishment of a “terrorist state” beyond its borders.
Two assailants, a man and a woman, attacked TAI on Wednesday with automatic rifles and explosives. Twenty-two people were injured.
Authorities said Thursday that the two attackers, neutralized by security forces, had been identified as members of the PKK terrorist group.
Trkiye has since struck 47 PKK targets in northern Iraq and northern Syria, according to the Defense Ministry. Defense Minister Yaar Gler said many “terrorists were neutralized” during these operations.
Immediately after the attack, the authorities renewed their commitment to continuing the fight against terrorism.
Erdoan said the heinous attack only strengthened Trkiye's determination to eliminate terrorism, while thanking the country's friends who showed solidarity. He said they would continue to fight terrorism in all its forms and with a multidimensional approach.
Participants in the security meeting included Vice President Cevdet Ylmaz, Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Defense Minister Gler, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, Chief of General Staff Metin Grak, National Intelligence Organization (MIT) Director Ibrahim Kaln and Presidential Communications Director Fahrettin Altun. .
Head of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB) Haluk Grgn, as well as senior advisors and representatives of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), were also present.
TAI is the largest aerospace manufacturer in Trkiye, producing drones, helicopters, training craft and developing the country's first indigenous combat aircraft, Kaan.
The PKK took up arms against the Turkish state in 1984 to achieve so-called Kurdish autonomy in southeastern regions and is designated as a terrorist organization by Ankara, as well as the United States and the European Union.
During its more than 40-year terrorist campaign against Trkiye, the PKK is responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children, infants and the elderly.
