Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held formal talks after six years at the 2024 BRICS Summit.
The first official meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi since border tensions erupted in eastern Ladakh in May 2020 took place on Wednesday at the BRICS conference in Russia, according to media reports.
A day after China and India reached an agreement on military patrols along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in eastern Ladakh, Foreign Minister Vikram Misri made this statement. According to the newspaper, the agreement is seen as an important step in attempts to resolve the four-year military conflict between the two countries.
“I can confirm that there will be a bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi Jinping tomorrow (Wednesday) on the sidelines of the BRICS summit,” Misri was quoted as saying.
It was Modi and Xi's first formal meeting since tensions erupted along the border, despite their brief greetings at the 2022 G20 summit in Indonesia. According to media reports, the two leaders last spoke informally during the BRICS meeting in Johannesburg in August 2023.
Kazan, which hosted the BRICS summit, was the planned venue for the meeting.
Patrol Agreement
According to the source, Misri said the immediate focus of the new patrol agreement reached on Monday will be disengagement, with additional discussions on troop de-escalation planned later.
“Patrolling and grazing activities in the areas under discussion will return to the situation that existed in 2020,” Misri was quoted as saying.
These talks did not repeat previous disengagement agreements. Instead, he focused on concerns that had not been addressed in previous years.
Misri noted that the agreement aims to prevent future clashes along the LAC. “We must ensure that mechanisms are in place to avoid incidents like those in the past,” he added.
Long-standing Indian-Chinese tensions
After a deadly battle in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, the deadliest military confrontation between the two nations in decades, relations between India and China hit a low point. Although there are still unresolved difficulties in places like Depsang and Demchok, both sides have now withdrawn from a number of conflict points following multiple military and diplomatic discussions.
These territories are expected to be covered by the recently signed agreement, allowing both countries to continue their patrols.
CPI chief D Raja stressed the need for communication and called for friendly border relations between China and India. In order to find a long-term solution, Raja said that “both countries must ensure that the borders remain peaceful, without tensions and military conflicts”, adding that communication and mutual trust are essential.
He suggested that India and China resume the situation of April 2020, as this could lead to further de-escalation of tensions.
On October 21, the Foreign Ministry said the agreement on the patrols was the result of lengthy negotiations between Chinese and Indian military and diplomatic representatives.
Meanwhile, China confirmed the deal, with a Foreign Ministry spokesperson saying: “We have reached a resolution on the relevant issue and will work with the Indian side to implement the solution.” » China also stressed that the two sides remain in close communication through diplomatic and military channels, according to media reports.
