Wisconsin's first Muslim women's badminton club creates a community of sisters

Every Wednesday morning, year-round, women from Greater Milwaukee and beyond meet in Brookfield to play indoor badminton.
During a recent session, women of different ages and ethnicities buzzed around three lanes, stopping occasionally to share snacks and stories. Some seemed like professional players, others were complete beginners.
They ranged in age from approximately 30 to 60 years and older. They came from Milwaukee's western suburbs, as well as Mequon to the north and Franklin to the south. Sometimes women travel from Oak Creek and even Chicago to participate, players said.
Some are single, others married. Some with a professional career; some work from home. Some are pregnant; some have young children; some have grown children; some have no children. Some are grandmothers.
Most are Muslim, but some Hindus and Christians are regulars. Women of all faiths and non-believers are welcome, organizers say.
