Israel-Gaza: Britain may hand over potential war crimes evidence collected by RAF reconnaissance aircraft to the International Criminal Court | world news

Evidence of potential war crimes collected by a British reconnaissance plane flying over Gaza could be presented to the International Criminal Court, Britain has confirmed.

The Royal Air Force (RAF) has flown hundreds of missions over and near the war-torn region since December to gather intelligence to help find hostages kidnapped from Israel by Hamas on October 7, 2023. It was reported that it did.

The Ministry of Defense (MOD) said the Shadow R1 reconnaissance aircraft flying over Israeli and international airspace were solely tasked with gathering intelligence to support Israel's hostage-hunting operation.

The reconnaissance planes are not involved in gathering intelligence on other aspects of the war against Hamas, which has killed tens of thousands of Palestinians, including women and children.

But a British spokesman said Britain would consider a request from international investigators to hand over all evidence collected by RAF reconnaissance planes that could reveal evidence of war crimes.

“In accordance with our international obligations, we will consider formal requests from the International Criminal Court to provide information relevant to the investigation of war crimes,” the spokesperson said.

It is understood that no such request has yet been made.

In May, prosecutors at the International Criminal Court (ICC) announced that they were seeking arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant on war crimes charges.

He also requested arrest warrants for Hamas leaders Yahya Sinwar, Ismail Haniyeh, and Mohammed Deif, who were killed in Israeli airstrikes.

Israel also claims to have killed him, but Hamas has not confirmed this.

A MoD spokesman said: “Our mission has been narrowly defined to focus solely on the release of hostages, including British nationals, and the RAF has been conducting regular unarmed flights for this sole purpose since December 2023.”
