Is Donald Trump a fascist?

Many leading Democrats have thought this for years. Now they are saying it loud and clear: they think Donald Trump is a fascist.

While Trump's potential ties to fascism have been publicly debated for nearly a decade, many Democrats running for federal office thought it was “best not to utter the term,” the New York Times said. This is changing. Trump talks “about fascism,” Charlemagne Tha God said during his podcast interview with Kamala Harris. “Can’t we just say that?” “Yes, we can say that,” Harris said. That followed revelations in a new book that retired Gen. Mark A. Milley, former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, called Trump “a fascist to the core.” Trump's Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly agreed.

There is hindsight. “The fascist theme is everywhere,” the Wall Street Journal said in an editorial. It's true that Trump's language is “often crude and divisive,” and he has a penchant for praising dictators. Yet he won the GOP nomination for a third time. “Are tens of millions of Americans really falling for a fascist takeover?” Probably not. Trump was “surrounded” by checks and balances during his term, the Journal said. During a second term, these same institutions “would oppose any attempt to overthrow the Constitution”.

“The beast from Germany in the 1930s”

“The left doesn’t know any other way to make its point,” Rich Lowry told National Review. Democrats cannot simply oppose the principles and candidates of the Republican Party. “No, the GOP must still be a slouching beast from 1930s Germany.” Democrats don't understand the constraints in place — or that the Supreme Court's decision granting Trump immunity from prosecution for “official acts” could “benefit President Biden” when he leaves office. Instead, we are faced with “irrational and disjointed” attacks on Trump and his agenda, Lowry said. “That always has to be the F-word with these people.”

“Let’s be honest, Trump comes off as a fascist,” Will Saletan told the Bulwark. Trump tried to overturn the 2020 election. He called for a “really violent day” of anti-crime action, promised to protect police from prosecution for following his orders, threatened to use the military against his domestic opponents and has threatened the broadcast licenses of networks whose reporting he doesn't like. The word “fascist” fits perfectly, Saletan said. “It's not hype; it's a classic application of the term.”

“I'm not afraid of Donald Trump”

Republicans say Democrats' accusations of fascism are themselves a kind of incitement. “All the rhetoric has to stop,” Rep. Mike Lawler (R-N.Y.) said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.” On NBC's “Meet the Press,” Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) took aim at Milley's “fascist to the core” comment about Trump: “You have the right to have your opinion, but I'm not afraid of Donald Trump, “Graham said.

Others do it. “There is no precedent for such a thing in American history,” Jamelle Bouie told the New York Times. Milley's warning about Trump is unusual: There is “no example” of another high-ranking general who has felt the need “to warn the public of the danger posed by his former and perhaps future head of the executive”. With good reason. During his first term, Trump had people around him who suppressed his worst impulses. This will not happen in a second term. “Next time we won’t be so lucky.”
