Fact check: Modi wasn't snubbed for this BRICS group photo. He had already left for India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Russia from October 22 to 23 to attend the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia, where he held bilateral talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin and several world leaders. Following this, a video of the event began circulating online, showing world leaders gathered for photography. However, Prime Minister Modi was nowhere to be found.
By sharing this video, many claimed that Poutine did not invite the Indian Prime Minister for this photoshoot, calling it an “international insult”. The archives of one of these articles can be consulted here.
India Today Fact Check revealed that the viral video, from the BRICS summit, was shot on October 24. Modi had left for India the day before.
Our probe
Reverse searching for key frames from the viral video led us to a Article from October 24 on the official X account of the ANI news agency. It read: “Russia: Dr S Jaishankar of EAM with heads of delegation at Kazan Expo International Exhibition Center, during the 16th BRICS Summit in BRICS plus format. »
The plenary session of the 16th BRICS Summit in BRICS-plus format brought together leaders of the Commonwealth of Independent States, as well as delegations from Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and international organizations .
Subsequent keyword searches led us to several reports That said, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar represented Modi at the BRICS Plus event in Kazan on October 24. The event brought together Putin, China's Xi Jinping and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. Jaishankar led the Indian delegation at the event as Modi returned to India on October 23 after the main sessions of the summit.
We also found a video on ANI's X account of October 23 where PM Modi can be seen boarding a plane. The post read, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi is flying to Delhi after attending the 16th BRICS Summit in Kazan, Russia. » This clearly showed that when the BRICS Plus event took place on October 24, Modi was not in Russia at that time.
For more information, we checked the Prime Minister's social media accounts and found that his last post about the Summit was on October 23, when he shared a video showing highlights of the event. We could not find any messages related to the October 24 or 25 Summit.
The Prime Minister indeed shared pictures of his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on October 25 at his residence in New Delhi.
So, it is clear that by the time the photoshoot seen in the viral video took place during the BRICS summit on October 24, Modi had already arrived in India.
