Men's tennis starts strongly in Birmingham on Friday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. The Belmont University men's tennis team returned to fall tournament action after a nearly two-week hiatus from competition, beginning play Friday morning at Samford University's CCB Collegiate Invitational by going 6-4 in singles play. All five Bruins competing at the Country Club of Birmingham in Birmingham, Alabama, had at least one singles victory on Friday.
Junior Eli Mizersky recorded two match wins to advance to the semi-finals of the Bulldog draw.
“I was very proud of the way Eli played today,” said the head coach Jeff zero. “Especially after his first set in his opening match against Tulane. He not only showed perseverance, but also adapted his game to play the way we saw him play. He played well and with great poise in both of his matches.”
After dropping a 7-5 opening set to Tulane's Vincent Vohl in his first-round match, Mizerski stormed back in sets two and three, 6-2, 6-2. In the quarterfinals of his tie, Mizerski dismissed Southern Miss' Niklas Jensen 7-5, 6-0.
Junior Sabi Roi and first-year Alabama resident Charlie Robin also achieved match victories in the first round in the red draw. Roi won both in straight sets, beating Tulane's Max Kalinin 6-4, 6-4, while Robin Matei defeated Palcau of Jacksonville State 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Junior Esunge Ndumbe and graduation Nicholas of Hellenes both also won in the consolation matches on Friday.
“We look forward to playing a lot of energetic doubles tomorrow morning and getting off to a good start,” coach Cero concluded.
The doubles action begins Saturday morning at 9 a.m. with two rounds, followed by a round of singles starting no earlier than 11:30 a.m.
Mizerski will face William Jade of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette in the semifinals of his draw on Saturday.
