Government responds to Face the Music campaign as promising sign for UK musicians and artists
Things are moving in the right direction.
The Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has responded to a campaign aimed at finding a solution to the problems facing musicians touring Europe after Brexit.
When the United Kingdom left the European Union, musicians lost the ability to work in Europe without restrictions. As a result, presenting and selling merchandise has become more difficult and expensive.
The UK music industry, a vital cultural and economic asset valued at 1.1 billion, has seen a decline in emerging talent. Many emerging artists choose to settle in Europe to benefit from better opportunities. Independent musicians, in particular, have been negatively affected, as the lack of an EU passport limits their work opportunities. Additionally, instrument makers are losing European customers due to soaring export costs.
Launched by the UK's European Movement, the country's largest pro-European movement, the Face the Music campaign calls for negotiated, reciprocal visa waiver deals to make travel easier for British musicians. The campaign also calls for a review of restrictions on the number of days artists and support workers can work in the EU in a 180-day period.
Pro-EU campaigners have written to the DCMS, as well as Lisa Nandy and Chris Bryant, the ministers responsible for the department, to question them on the central issues at the heart of the Face the Music campaign.
The letter asked what the government was going to do to resolve the post-Brexit problems artists face when touring the EU. He also discusses the impact of Brexit on creative and cultural workers.
Activists were delighted with the response, which read:
We want to work with the EU to explore ways to improve touring conditions for artists to address key issues for our brilliant musicians and artists in areas such as visas or movement of goods.
As Minister Bryant indicated, this Government is working to reset and strengthen our relationships with our European partners.
Ministers are considering a range of policy options to ensure the creative industries, arts and heritage sectors can thrive and meet our commitments.
The European Movement UK says it will not get carried away but is pleased that the narrative is clearly changing and things are moving in the right direction.
