THE People's Liberation Armys (PLA) greater emphasis on night training signals a willingness to deal with surprises, including in a possible war scenario Taiwansay military experts.

Beijing's highest-ranking uniformed military official, Zhang Youxiasupervised the latest exercises of this type, which took place earlier this week in Hebei, a province bordering the capital.

Zhang is the first vice chairman of the Central Military Commission, a body headed by President Xi Jinping. He is also a member of the Politburo, Beijing's highest decision-making group.

He inspected live-fire exercises during a three-day combined military operation that began last Sunday, according to the official Xinhua news agency.
