The letter, signed by notable MPs and Lords including Kim Johnson, Paula Barker, Apsana Begum and Lord Peter Hain, expresses serious concerns about the prolonged imprisonment of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, whose Working Group of United Nations on arbitrary detention noted the absence. no legal basis and was allegedly aimed at preventing his re-entry into politics.

Amnesty International's assessment of Khan's case highlights a worrying trend of the justice system being used to keep him in detention and exclude him from political activity. According to the letter, Khan was deprived of sufficient time and resources to properly prepare his defense in several trials, reflecting a clear misuse of the judicial process in Pakistan to intimidate political opposition and undermine judicial independence.

The recently passed 26th Constitutional Amendment, reducing the powers of the Supreme Court, would threaten the separation of powers. Furthermore, the authorities' recent use of the new public order law to crack down on Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, which led to the arrest of its members despite permitted rallies, further reinforces these undemocratic actions.

The letter calls for Khan's immediate release and urges the British Foreign Secretary to defend human rights and democracy by engaging with the Pakistani government.
