CEOs of major tech companies are calling Trump, seeking to rekindle their relationship with the former president before Election Day.
CNN-
Top executives at some of the nation's biggest tech companies sought out Donald Trump ahead of Election Day, seeking an audience with the former president as the likelihood of him returning to the Oval Office hinges on a coin toss.
Trump and Apple CEO Tim Cook discussed ongoing legal issues for iPhone makers in Europe last week, the former president revealed in an interview Thursday. Later in the day, Trump told a Las Vegas audience that Google's head, CEO Sundar Pichai, had called for people to marvel at Republican candidates' campaigning and stop throwing fries at a McDonald's from Pennsylvania.
He said: This is one of the hottest things. We've never seen anything like this, Trump recalled. He told the story Friday on the Joe Rogans podcast and identified the executive as Pichai.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy also recently reached out to the former president, two sources familiar with their phone call told CNN. And Mark Zuckerberg called him out this summer after the first failed assassination attempt on Trump, in which the Meta CEO told the Republican candidate that he admired the way he handled the shooting and wished him a speedy recovery, said a person familiar with the conversation. Despite their once strained relationship, the two spoke glowingly about each other through the media in the months that followed.
The increased pressure from some of the world's most influential tech executives to speak with the former president before Election Day comes amid an exceptionally close race between Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris. And it's the latest sign of a major business community seeking to rekindle relations with the former president in anticipation of a possible second term.
Trump had already counted Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X and Tesla, as a supporter and a financial force injecting more than $100 million into the machine to get him elected. Musk had at one point said he had no plans to donate to either presidential campaign after a meeting with Trump in March at Mar-a-Lago. But lately, the world's richest man has been dangling $1 million in cash every day to people who register to vote and sign a petition affirming their support for the right to free speech and to carry weapons, a scheme that the Justice Department says may be illegal. Musk has invested at least $118 million in a super PAC supporting Trump's White House bid. Other Silicon Valley executives also used their vast platforms and deep pockets to bolster the former president.
Apple, Google, and Amazon, however, are far less outwardly engaged in partisan politics than Musk and other Silicon Valley converts, but each of their moves can rock the stock market and spark confidence or fear in the outlook American economics. In Trump's orbit, the renewed interest in forays with him is a sign that many in the business world are accepting the likelihood that they might have to deal with the former president again or, at least, covering up their bets, people familiar with the former president said. conversations said.
There are some who seem to realize that, like, holy shit, this guy might get re-elected. I don't want him, his administration, to come after us, a person close to Trump told CNN. What he says out loud, I think they hear it and take it seriously.
Trump's conversation with Jassy, which has not been previously reported, comes as Amazon founder and largest shareholder Jeff Bezos faces backlash related to another company he owns, the Washington Post. The newspaper recently decided not to support a candidate in the presidential race for the first time since the 1980s, leading to a wave of subscription cancellations and internal blowback.
A person with knowledge of the conversation with Jassy said it was initiated at the company's request and characterized the exchange with Trump as a general, hello-type thing. Amazon did not respond to a request for comment.
Trump also spoke Friday with executives from Bezos' space exploration company Blue Origin after an event in Austin, Texas, the Associated Press reported.
Apple did not respond to an email from CNN asking about the nature of Cook's call with Trump. A Google spokesperson said the company had nothing to share on the matter.
Trump clearly valued his friendship with the tech titans. He posted his private conversations with them during interviews and appearances. He now praises the companies he once blamed for his 2020 election defeat, setting off years of Republican-led attacks on tech companies.
After Trump's assassination attempt in July, Zuckerberg called Trump's immediate reaction to the shooting badass, during an interview with The Circuit podcast at Metas headquarters in Menlo Park, California. Trump had made Meta a regular target of his ire, accusing the company's social media platform, Facebook, of helping Democrats in 2020. Meta for a time kicked Trump off the company's platforms, including Facebook and Instagram.
But now Trump says Zuckerberg is doing much better.
I actually believe he's staying out of the election, which is good, the former president said in an interview with the Barstool Sports Bussin With The Boys podcast.
Whoever takes the oath of office next year will immediately face the decision of whether to continue President Joe Biden's crackdown on big tech. Biden's Justice Department has sued Apple under antitrust laws, accusing the company of manipulating smartphone markets and stifling innovation. He has also aggressively gone after Google, arguing that the company is the modern equivalent of the AT&T monopoly that the government dissolved in the 1980s in a historic decision.
In a recent interview before the Economic Club of Chicago, Trump declined to say whether he would follow through on Biden's efforts to break up Google. However, he said he was not a fan of the company and that they treated me poorly. He previously said he would demand that Google be sued to the fullest if he were to be re-elected, and claimed without evidence that Google broke the law and only posted bad stories about Trump and good stories about Harris.
However, Trump's tone on Google changed in an interview Thursday.
If you look at Google lately, I think you'll see that they've become a lot more inclined toward Trump, the former president told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt. They're starting to like Trump, because they're starting to understand.
Hours later, Trump shared with a Las Vegas audience that he had spoken with the top Google executive.
Google and Apple also face growing legal challenges overseas, where the European Union has imposed multibillion-dollar judgments on the companies for tax evasion. Apple's tax bill is $14.4 billion and Google owes $2.6 billion, Europe's top court ruled last month in an irrevocable judgment.
Trump said Thursday he discussed the decision with Cook, with whom he has a relationship dating back to his first term. He suggested the outcome for Apple would change if it won in November.
Let me tell you: All these companies will be freed if you have the right president, Trump said. All of these businesses will be healthy. Don't worry about that.
