Donald Trump held a spectacular rally at New York's Madison Square Garden on Sunday to kick off the final full week of the presidential campaign, featuring celebrity guests and a new economic proposal.

But repeated insults and sometimes racist and misogynistic remarks from guest speakers threatened to draw attention.

The last weeks of a campaign are often those where candidates launch a unifying message to bring together as many voters as possible. Trump's rally at Madison Square Garden was instead marked by swear words, racist jokes about Latinos and misogynistic remarks.

That focus could help Trump capture headlines and mobilize some existing supporters, although it is unlikely to attract new voters already turned off by the rhetoric of some Republican presidential candidates.

The first speaker at the former president's rally at Madison Square Garden, roast comedian and podcast host Tony Hinchcliffe, set the tone with a disparaging joke about welcoming Latinos into the United States with open arms while making a hunting motion.

He also disparaged Latinos with a crude joke about baby making and illegal immigration, joked that Puerto Rico is a floating island of garbage, and joked that Kansas City Chiefs tight end , Travis Kelce, could be the next OJ Simpson, referring to the football star who was accused and then acquitted of murdering his ex-wife.

Kelce is dating pop singer Taylor Swift, who said earlier this year that she would vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump has made anti-immigration rhetoric the centerpiece of his campaign. As president, he also talked about ending the automatic right to citizenship for babies born in the United States to noncitizens, although many scholars agree that changing the law might require a constitutional amendment.

The Trump campaign is currently fighting for votes from women and Latinos. Polls suggest the gender gap in this year's elections could be the widest on record. The Harris campaign, by contrast, has highlighted stories of women whose lives have been threatened by strict abortion bans.

The Harris campaign immediately seized on Hinchcliffe's remarks on Puerto Rico. In a tweet posted after his introduction, Hinchcliffe wrote in response: These people have no sense of humor. He also added: I love Puerto Rico and my vacations there. I laughed at everyone watching the whole thing.

Defining who is American

The rally featured high-profile Trump supporters including Terry Bollea, better known as professional wrestler Hulk Hogan, television personality Dr. Phil McGraw, and singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood.

But other Trump allies have appealed to an “us versus them” mentality. Radio host Sid Rosenberg insulted former Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, as well as the Democratic Party as a whole.

The whole party is a bunch of degenerates, he added. Jew haters and thugs, all of them.

Several commenters also insulted Harris, with private equity fund manager Grant Cardone calling her “fake.” “She and her pimps will destroy our country,” he said.

Conservative commentator Tucker Carlson later mocked Harris' mixed-race heritage.

It's going to be pretty hard [for Democrats] to look at us and say: You know what? Kamala Harris, she got 85 million votes because she's so impressive. As the first low-IQ former Samoan-Malaysian prosecutor from California to be elected president. It was just a wave of popular support.

Carlson went beyond the insults, nodding to the racist Great Replacement theory he has espoused in the past.

People know that in a country that has been taken over by a ruling class that despises them, their values, their history, their culture and their customs, truly hates them to the point that they are trying to replace them, a- he declared. They know someone who really cares about them: it's Donald Trump. And it’s rewarded.

That sentiment was echoed later, when former Trump White House aide Stephen Miller told the crowd: America is for Americans and only Americans.

Tax credits and the enemy within

After a pre-program of more than four hours, Melania Trump made a rare appearance on the campaign trail, introducing her husband.

In his speech, Trump began by laying out his economic message, emphasizing the inflation that has hit the country under the Biden administration, and saying he would fix it.

He also announced a new policy, saying he would implement a tax credit for people caring for family members at home.

Harris announced her own plan earlier this month to expand Medicare to cover this type of care.

Trump also devoted, as he often does, a large part of his speech to the topic of undocumented immigrants.

Once I take office, the invasion of migrants into our country will end and the restoration of our country will begin, he told the crowd.

Trump also took time to address a recent interview with Fox News, in which he called the radical left's lunatics the enemy within and proposed using the military against them.

He backed up those comments at the Sunday evening rally.

They are intelligent and vicious, and we must defeat them, he said. And when I say: the enemy within, the other side goes crazy. It becomes a sound of oh, how can he say no, they've done very bad things to this country. They are indeed the enemy from within.

However, Trump still tried to make his speech a message of unity.

The Republican Party has truly become the party of inclusion, and there's something good about that, he said near the end of his speech.
