The CDC considers the risk to the general public to be extremely low

The CDC and the Iowa Department of Health are investigating a suspected case of Lassa fever, which was diagnosed today in an Iowa resident who returned to the United States from West Africa early of the month. The patient was not ill during the trip, so the risk to other airline passengers is extremely low. The patient was hospitalized in isolation at the University of Iowa Health Care Medical Center when he died earlier this afternoon. Testing early this morning by the Nebraska Laboratory Response Network laboratory found the illness to be presumptive positive for Lassa fever and confirmatory testing is planned.

Lassa fever is a viral illness common in West Africa but rarely seen in the United States. In West Africa, Lassa virus is carried by rodents and is transmitted to humans through contact with the urine or feces of infected rodents. In rare cases, it can be transmitted from person to person through direct contact with a sick person's blood or body fluids, through mucous membranes, or through sexual contact. The virus is not spread through casual contact and patients are not thought to be contagious before symptoms appear. Approximately 100,000 to 300,000 cases of Lassa fever and 5,000 Lassa fever-related deaths occur each year in West Africa.

If confirmed, the suspected case in Iowa would be the ninth known case of Lassa fever since 1969 in travelers returning to the United States from areas where Lassa fever is common.

The CDC is supporting state and local public health officials in Iowa as they work to learn more about how the patient may have contracted Lassa fever. Initial information suggests the patient may have come into contact with rodents while in West Africa. The CDC and other federal agencies have offered federal assistance to Iowa. People with Lassa fever can only transmit the disease when they have active symptoms and the CDC is working with state public health officials to identify people who had contact with the patient after the onset of symptoms. Individuals identified as close contacts of the patient will be monitored for 21 days.

Additional information will be shared as we learn more about this patient. For more information about Lassa fever, visit the CDC website at About Lassa Fever | Lassa fever | CDC.

View photos The advantages of comparing online car insurance quotes are the following: Online quotes can be obtained from anywhere and at any time. Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily. Although drivers are recommended to not choose a policy just based on its price, drivers can easily sort quotes by insurance price. Using brokerage websites will allow drivers to get quotes from multiple insurers, thus making the comparison faster and easier.
