The United States and Israel have nothing to gain from their war against the UN | The United Nations

It is ironic that the United States and its closest ally, Israel, a state born from the horrors of World War II, have spent most of the last 75 years undermining the so-called rules-based international order (RBO ).

After all, the RBO was created in the aftermath of World War II, under American leadership, to prevent a repeat of that costly conflict, which killed more than 50 million people, including six million Jews in the Holocaust. Nazi.

The United Nations (UN) is arguably the most important pillar of the RBO. It is responsible for maintaining international peace, preventing wars of aggression, and ensuring that human rights atrocities such as those committed during the Holocaust are never repeated.

However, the United States and Israel have long viewed the UN with particular disdain and worked to render it ineffective.

As American international law scholar Richard Falk explained in his 2008 book, The Costs of War: International Law, the UN, and World Order, they repeatedly and defiantly broke the so-called Nuremberg Promise according to which legal standards used against the Nazi regime would apply to all future states, including the United States and the rest of the Allied powers of World War II, thereby undermining any prospect of peace and normalcy in the world. Falk established that the United States, in particular, was constantly working to weaken international law and erode the authority of the United Nations.

Indeed, major decisions in American foreign policy, such as the invasion of Iraq in 2003, have repeatedly demonstrated what the famous philosopher Noam Chomsky defined as Washington's contempt for the international system.

Of course, the United States also has a habit of invoking the importance of maintaining the RBO or protecting the UN, but it only does so to promote its own interests, for example when it seeks to stigmatize its enemies.

. Whenever the UN refuses to follow the American example or takes an action that harms the interests of its allies, Washington is quick to express its contempt for the organization.

The United States' contempt for the international system is perhaps most evident in its history of vetoing the UN Security Council.

Between 1972, when the United States first used its veto to support Israel, and December 2023, the United States has vetoed 77 resolutions, including 45 critical of Israel .

In February 2024, the United States used its veto for the 78th time since 1972, marking the 46th time it has protected Israel.

During this period, no other permanent member of the Security Council has approached the American brand. Russia (44), China (16), the United Kingdom (17) and France (9) used their veto power a total of 86 times. .

In the current war on Gaza alone, the United States has vetoed three UN Security Council ceasefire resolutions on behalf of Israel.

Meanwhile, under American protection, Israel has intensified its attacks on the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) since the start of its genocide in Gaza.

In January 2024, Israel accused UNRWA of terrorism, prompting the United States to cut funding for the agency, which provides essential services to millions of Palestinians.

Yesterday, the Israeli parliament approved banning UNRWA from operating in both Gaza and the West Bank, and Israel is also seeking to declare UNRWA a terrorist organization.

Israel has long been at war with UNRWA, but these recent actions represent a significant escalation, especially when considered in the context of recent Israeli violence in Gaza.

During the ongoing war, Israel has repeatedly bombed UN schools and killed more than 220 UN personnel. No other conflict in UN history has killed so many UN personnel.

During the current war, Israel has also demonstrated its contempt for the UN in other symbolic ways.

In March 2024, Israel's ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, shredded a copy of the UN charter to protest the UN general assembly's decision to grant certain rights to Palestine.

Last month, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave a speech at the UN, during which he called the institution a swamp of anti-Semitic bile, a contemptuous and contemptible farce in the eyes of decent people around the world.

Shortly after Netanyahu's speech, Israel declared UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres persona non grata, accused him of supporting terrorists, rapists and murderers, and banned him from entering Israel .

More recently, Israel has launched a series of apparently deliberate attacks against UN peacekeepers in Lebanon.

As Israel escalates its attacks on the UN, the United States remains largely inactive. For example, when 40 countries condemned Israeli attacks on UN peacekeepers, the United States refused to endorse this statement.

The United States and Israel have also consistently attacked, insulted and attempted to undermine the International Court of Justice (ICJ), the UN's main judicial body, since a genocide case was raised there against Israel.

Noam Chomsky has described the United States and Israel as the two major rogue states in the world. History shows that dishonest actors eventually face serious consequences.

The United States and Israel would do well to rein themselves in sooner rather than later, because a weakened international system risks creating chaos that could hasten their own decline.

The American empire is already in decline, and Israel's war on Gaza further harms the United States' international standing while jeopardizing its strategic and economic interests.

As for Israel, its actions in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon could also accelerate its own collapse, as Israeli academic Ilan Pappe and countless other analysts of the region suggest.

Israel and the United States should recognize how much they need the UN and the RBO, if only to safeguard their interests.
