The researchers estimated that protection from lower sugar intake in utero accounted for about one-third of the risk reduction. Rationing was also associated with a delay in the onset of the disease in people who developed type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure.
Although other foods were rationed during World War II, people did not actually significantly change their intake of foods or nutrients other than sugar, the researchers said. During the era of rationing, people were consuming about 41 grams of sugar each day, but as sugar became more available, that amount increased rapidly, to the point where people were eating 80 grams each day. Researchers also noted that children's oral health worsened after rationing and that early exposure was associated with a lifelong sweet tooth.
