Big Island offshore volcano experiences a swarm of earthquakes

Scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory have reported “increased seismic disturbances” at Kamahuakanaloa Volcano (formerly known as Lōʻihi Seamount), located off the southeastern island of Hawaii.

The earthquake swarm began at around 6pm on November 1, and although seismic activity decreased slightly around midnight, the swarm remained above “background levels” on Saturday, according to a situation report from the Croatian Defense Council.

Scientists say there were more than 70 earthquakes in the swarm, including 32 with a magnitude greater than 2.0 and two with a magnitude greater than 4.0. The largest, a magnitude 4.3, occurred Saturday at 12:05 p.m., 3.6 miles below sea level and three miles below the volcano's summit.

The USGS says only one report has been received from Hawaii Island due to this event.

High seismic disturbances continue at Kamaʻehuakanaloa, although they are not expected to affect other volcanoes or infrastructure on the island.

Scientists say it is currently difficult to pinpoint the source of the quakes, although it may be linked to magma moving beneath Camahuacanaloa. Previous swarms have consisted of thousands of earthquakes over days to weeks, and were likely related to volcanic eruptions.

Any eruption at Kamaʻehuakanaloa would not affect residents of Hawaii Island, according to HVO, which continues to monitor the undersea volcano and will issue further updates on significant changes in activity.
