A former general practitioner who battled incurable lung cancer for 10 years said the diagnosis was “a bolt out of the blue” as he didn't realize his back pain was a symptom.

Oldham resident Sally Hall said lung cancer was the last thing on her mind when her back started hurting after hauling boxes around in her garage.

But doctors discovered a tumor in her lung, performed surgery, and after 10 years of treatment, her disease stabilized.

She said anyone could develop the disease, but she wanted to raise awareness that even with a terminal diagnosis, “there is still hope.”

Because of his job, Hall said he is well aware of the common symptoms of lung cancer, including shortness of breath, repeated chest infections and persistent coughing.

After cleaning out a box of ceramic tiles from the garage, her back began to hurt, but the thought that it could be cancer never crossed her mind.

The pain continued and doctors discovered a tumor.

Hall said she was told, “If I don't get treatment, I won't be here for long.''

She had spinal surgery before starting targeted therapy and is still having it 10 years later.

Her cancer symptoms have since stabilized, and Hall said she has learned to live with “just about every side effect imaginable, from dry eyes and skin to diarrhea and unruly hair.”

“I was incredibly lucky with my treatment,” she added.

Hall has been working with the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation to raise awareness that lung cancer can have less obvious symptoms.

“I never thought I would experience lung cancer because I had never smoked,” she said.

She said it was “very important” to share her story to show that whether you smoke or not, “if you have lungs, you can get cancer.”

Paula Chadwick, the charity's chief executive, said that while lung cancer was still “intrinsically linked to smoking”, the reality was that “anyone can get this disease”.

She said the label of smoker or non-smoker had a direct impact on how quickly people were diagnosed.

“That's why we're calling for an end to these outdated labels,” she said.

“Lung cancer doesn't notice them, and neither should we.”
