Police brutality during Imran Khan protests: Video shows man pushed out of 25ft shipping container

A disturbing video has emerged online showing Pakistani security forces pushing a man out of a pile of shipping containers during a protest. The incident reportedly took place on Tuesday as thousands of supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan gathered in Islamabad to demand his release from prison. Khan's top aides condemned the act, calling it one of many instances of police brutality during the protests. The man, who was praying on top of a container, was “brutally pushed from a height equivalent to three stories”, according to Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI). The protests have since been canceled.

The video shows the man praying atop a 25-foot-tall shipping container tower set up to block protesters. Security forces can be seen following him onto the container, surrounding him and then pushing him off the edge.

The man's condition remains unknown, with a PTI official saying the party is still investigating the incident.

Protests turn deadly

Protests across Pakistan have turned deadly in recent days. At least six people, including four members of the security forces and two civilians, were killed in clashes. On Wednesday, Islamabad police reported the arrest of 600 protesters during Tuesday's operation, bringing the total number of arrests to more than 1,000 since the start of the sit-in protest.

Imran Khan's party launched a march towards Islamabad on Sunday, demanding his release. Protesters insisted they would not leave the capital until Khan, jailed on several criminal charges including fraud, was released. However, police pushed back protesters with tear gas as they approached Democracy Square on Tuesday.

Imran Khan's arrest in 2023 was linked to allegations that he and his wife, Bushra Bibi, accepted land as a bribe through a trust. Khan also faces anti-terrorism charges related to the clashes following his arrest, as well as charges related to the disclosure of state secrets in 2022 (for which he was acquitted) and an illegal marriage in 2018 ( also leading to an acquittal).
