Downtown Sacramento workers were shaken after the quake

While some people on the ground only felt the alarm on their phones, some people working in high-rise buildings in Sacramento felt it much more.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Despite being hundreds of miles from the epicenter, powerful earthquakes Thursday morning shook the California Valley, including downtown Sacramento.

Almost any analogy does not sum up the nauseating feeling when the ground decided to shake violently while inside a large building.

“People were looking out the windows and the curtains were shaking,” downtown worker Melinda Steinert said. “Suddenly, you felt like you were on a pitching ship.”

Steinert witnessed the quake on the 13th floor of a 21-story building, but closer to the ground on the sixth floor, it couldn't have been any more comfortable.

“We all kind of stood up, were looking around at each other, and then went to the window,” said Steven Garcia, a downtown worker. “Some people were like, 'I'm getting out of here' and just left. I think a lot of people left when that happened.”

While some people felt some sense of security in new or updated buildings, for others it was very different. At this construction site, some workers had to evacuate.

“We got a phone call and they told us to get out of there or step back,” said Hector Rodriguez, a downtown construction worker. “They check the elevators for cracks or any broken ones.”

Although she may not work in construction, structural safety was also a top priority for downtown worker Cheyenne Pham. She says her business building was built in the 1970s.

“That was like a full two minutes, so the anxiety was like, 'When is it going to stop?' Pham said. “The immediate idea was: When was the last time the structure was renovated?”

Fortunately, its structure withstood the shaking, as did all the other structures in Sacramento. Although the earthquake may come and go within minutes, it produced memories that will not soon be forgotten.

“I started texting my husband, and then I started texting my family, and I was like, 'Hey, we're in an earthquake right now,'” Pham said. “So it was a little unsettling. I just wanted it to stop.”
