Businesses in Ferndale spent the day cleaning up the mess left behind after a 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck parts of Northern California Thursday morning. Several residents and store owners told KCRA they were home when the quake struck. They said it sounded like a big sensation. When the traffic stopped, business owners in the Humboldt County town checked their stores. Some have been lucky without much damage. Others were left in disarray. At Pearly Gait on Main Street, dozens of items fell off shelves as the ground shook. One resident said the store owners were older and were not able to clean the store on Thursday. But some community members are stepping up to help clean it up on Friday. One wine store said its store had recently been updated, so it had not suffered significant damage. “I was very surprised there was no damage,” Christie said. Fellows, who owns the Sitka Wine Lounge. “We didn't have any broken bottles at all. We had a fair number of broken glasses and things moved around the room, but there wasn't much damage at all.” The cleanup comes with a schedule, and Ferndale is scheduled to celebrate the big holiday event downtown Friday evening, he said.
