My beloved teacher dies of Legionnaires' disease

FOX 13's Jordan Bowen reported on the death of Kathy Pennington, who died on Nov. 24 from Legionella, a serious and rare form of pneumonia.

ST. Petersburg, Florida – Pasadena Basic Elementary School is mourning the loss of one of its teachers, Kathy Pennington, 61, who passed away on November 24th.

Pennington had just celebrated his 61st birthday two days before his death. Her family said she was hospitalized with high fever and chills and her health rapidly deteriorated. She spent four days in intensive care and underwent dialysis.

Her family told FOX 13 that she tested positive while in the hospital. Legionella, the bacteria that causes Legionnaires' diseasewhich is a severe form of pneumonia.

“It's like a dry cough, and it comes on like you don't think you're sick,” says Dr. Sami Sanmari, a family physician. “You think you have a cough that comes and goes, and then it continues for a while. And then as it progresses, you start to have a fever, chest pain, shortness of breath, and then that can lead to hospitalization.” ”

The Florida Department of Health is investigating, and the school district has removed students from the area where Pennington taught kindergarten. In a letter to parents, the school district said the action was to repair the air conditioning system and did not mention the teacher's death.

“This is a waterborne disease, so especially in large buildings, it can be transmitted through plumbing systems, air conditioning equipment, things like water supplies and hot tubs in buildings,” Sanmari said.

Pennington's family said she was a teacher for 36 years, most recently teaching kindergarten at Pasadena Basic Elementary School.

“She was an exceptional and passionate teacher who was popular with many of her students,” her sister Suzanne Geisler said in a statement to FOX 13. “She had a contagious laugh and a great enthusiasm for life. She kept in touch with her students,” including sending letters and commissions to one student in prison. And she just loved her children. ”

The school says students will return to regular classrooms once repairs are complete. In the same memo to parents, parents also said that out of an abundance of caution, air quality samples have been submitted to an outside laboratory and results are pending. He also said an environmental company cleaned the building.
