Record outbreak of dengue fever in Latin America
The number of dengue fever cases in Latin America has nearly tripled this year to a record high, the Pan American Health Organization (Pajo) said on Tuesday.
The region has recorded more than 12.6 million infections and more than 7,700 deaths, making it the region's largest outbreak since records began in 1980, according to the city of Pahoe.
Brazil, Argentina, Colombia and Mexico were particularly hard hit by the virus, accounting for the majority of infections and deaths.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause serious illness and death in some cases.
Symptoms include fever, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, muscle and joint pain, and a patchy rash.
Patients with more severe forms of dengue fever may experience symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, fatigue, vomiting, and blood in the vomit or stool.
Vaccines have been introduced in some countries in the region, while others, such as Honduras, plan to begin distribution in 2025.
In his statement, Pajo called for increased mitigation efforts and cooperation across the Americas.
The center's director, Dr. Jarvas Barbosa, said the high number of infections is related to a hotter, more humid climate and factors such as standing water around homes and improper waste management. He said it is creating a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
He also said the virus posed a “higher than normal” risk to children.
In Guatemala, 70% of dengue-related deaths were in children, while in Mexico, Costa Rica and Paraguay, people under 15 accounted for more than a third of seriously ill people, according to Pajo data.
Children and people with pre-existing conditions are more susceptible to the disease and are more likely to develop more severe symptoms.
According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about half of the world's population lives in areas at risk of contracting the disease.
It is spread through the bite of an infected mosquito. The most common are Aedes aegypti.
