Trump invites China's Xi Jinping to attend inauguration, reports CBS News
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to attend his inauguration next month, CBS News reported on Wednesday, citing several sources.
The invitation to the Jan. 20 inauguration in Washington came in early November, shortly after the Nov. 5 presidential election, and it was unclear whether it had been accepted, CBS reported.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump said in an interview with NBC News on Friday that he “got along very well” with Xi and that they had “had communications as recently as this week.”
It would be unprecedented for a Chinese leader, one of the United States' main geopolitical rivals, to attend the inauguration of a U.S. president.
Trump has appointed many China hawks to key positions in his new administration, including Sen. Marco Rubio as secretary of state.
The president-elect said he would impose additional 10% tariffs on Chinese goods unless Beijing does more to end trafficking in the highly addictive narcotic fentanyl. He also threatened to impose tariffs of more than 60% on Chinese goods during his election campaign.
In late November, Chinese state media warned Trump that his promise to impose additional tariffs on Chinese goods due to fentanyl flows could draw the world's two largest economies into a mutually destructive tariff war.
On Wednesday, U.S. Chinese Ambassador Xie Feng read a letter from Xi at a U.S.-China Business Council gala in Washington, in which the Chinese leader said Beijing was prepared to remain in communication with the United States.
“We should choose dialogue over confrontation and win-win cooperation over zero-sum games,” Xi said in the letter.
Xie added that the two countries should not decouple supply chains. But Nicholas Burns, the U.S. ambassador to Beijing, said in a pre-recorded video speech that China sometimes tries to “water down” difficult and competitive relations.
“No amount of happy talk can mask our deep differences,” Burns said.
