Magnitude 7.0 earthquake triggers tsunami warning and evacuations

HUMBOLDT – A massive earthquake struck the North Coast on Thursday, December 5, prompting a tsunami warning and the evacuation of low-lying areas.

The 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred at 10:44 a.m. about 40 miles offshore from Rio del. Despite the size of the earthquake, it was mild and did not cause major damage. No injuries were reported.

Shortly after the earthquake, a tsunami warning was issued.

“The National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska issued a tsunami warning for much of the northwest California coast shortly after the earthquake. Once it became clear that no residual waves were likely, the tsunami warning was canceled. “There is no tsunami threat.” Currently for Humboldt County,” a news release from the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office said that afternoon.

The tsunami warning led to a mass evacuation of the Samoa Peninsula. At the time of the earthquake, Pacific Gas & Electric Company crews were working in Manila to upgrade power lines. There were also crews working on underground fiber optic cables.

A long line of trucks and vehicles were backed up on the highway, in the tsunami flood zone, as it headed toward Arcata. Parents rushed to schools to pick up their children, blocking traffic in nearby neighborhoods (see letter, page 6).

At the Jacobi Warehouse in Arcata Plaza, building co-owner Bill Chino was on a 12-foot ladder decorating a Christmas tree at 10:44 a.m.

“I thought someone was shaking the ladder from the bottom, like a practical joke,” Chino said. “I went downstairs and no one was there.”
