Donald Trump invites Xi Jinping to the inauguration ceremony
US President-elect Donald Trump has invited Chinese President Xi Jinping to his inauguration ceremony on January 20. This comes as Trump has appointed China hardliners to key positions in his administration.
Trump took the stage at the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday after being named Time Magazine's “Person of the Year.” Asked by reporters about Xi's invitation to Washington, he said the two men had “very good relations.”
Trump's new press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed the invitation in an interview on Fox News. She called the move an example of “creating an open dialogue with leaders of countries that are not only our allies but also our adversaries and competitors.”
She said it was not yet “determined” whether Xi would accept the invitation, and she added that they had invited other world leaders but had not named them.
CBS News reports that State Department records show a foreign leader has never attended an inauguration ceremony. The outlet also says Xi is not expected to attend Trump's inauguration.
