Table tennis robot takes on Olympic medalist at the Tokyo fair

A robot that plays table tennis put Olympian Miwa Harimoto to the test at a demonstration event organized by the semiconductor industry in Tokyo.
The Omron Corp. developed ninth-generation Forpheus robot was the star of the show on the last day of the Semicon Japan exhibition at Tokyo Big Sight on December 13.
Harimoto won a silver medal in the women's team competition at the Paris Olympics this summer.
Omron said it has been steadily improving the robot's functions in table tennis as a way to further develop the technology.
Forpheus uses three cameras and sensors positioned directly above the table to track the position of the ball and the opponent's movement. The robot moves its racket after its computer brain calculates the ball's trajectory and predicts its return.
The robot was never intended to compete with top players, but was developed to serve as a training teacher for practice sessions.
But in the latest version, generative artificial intelligence has been installed so that the robot can talk to its opponent during training.
Harimoto said she watched a video of Forpheus before the event: I'm a little nervous because it seemed very strong.
The pace was initially slow, so Harimoto and the robot were able to continue with a relaxed rally.
Forpheus said: It seems that you are an experienced table tennis player.
That caused laughter from the audience.
The robot said faster balls would be returned and the pace quickened, but it couldn't return a strong blow from Harimoto.
“I was really surprised,” she said. It made no mistakes and played in a stable manner, so I thought the technology was incredible. I had to work somewhat hard because I felt like I had to give back all the recordings.
Kyoto-based Omron is better known for its health-related products, such as thermometers and scales. But the main profit center is industrial machines intended to automate factory production lines.
To showcase its technology in that sector, Omron began developing the table tennis robot around 2012 and debuted the first Forpheus in China, where table tennis is king.
Young engineers formed teams to improve the technology and every year or two a new version was released.
Internal company discussions have always started over whether developing technology for a table tennis robot was the right thing to do. The latest version has been improved to be able to return underspin shots. Harimoto also gave her own advice, suggesting that Forpheus could become an even stronger player if he shot with more spin.
