Table Tennis: NAN's Okoye crowned FCT SWAN Week 2024 Champion

Victor Okoye, an editor with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), was on Friday crowned champion of the 2024 FCT SWAN Week Table Tennis Tournament in Abuja.

This was after he dismissed giant killer Godstime Egelege-Idama of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) 11 – 6 in the final to lift the prestigious trophy.

NAN reports that Okoye had also defeated Fashemi Emmanuel of Kapital FM 11-4 in the semi-final before ending Egelege-Idama's fairytale run in the tournament.

For its part, Egelege-Idama had pulled off a setback in a match full of intensity, pressure and sheer unpredictability.

This was after he scored a comeback win in a thrilling semi-final against Liberty TV's Odion Abdulrazak, sending the match to a five-point decider.

The much-fancied Abdulrazak had started the match on the lead after racing to a huge 7-0 lead as he looked to run away with the win and book a last-place finish against Okoye.

However, Egelege-Idama had other ideas as he stepped up his game to come back quickly and level the match at 10-10, forcing the nervous encounter into a nail-biting decider.

Odion would eventually succumb to the pressure as he lost 3-5 to a much rejuvenated Egelege-Idama who had the wind in their sails.

But Egelege-Idama failed to replicate the form that had earned him the hard-earned reputation of a 'giant killer', while a ruthless Okoye quickly dismissed any thoughts of another fairytale victory and ended his run in the final lofty title ambition.

NAN also reports that in the third place match, Abdulrazak, who looked more like a wounded lion, devoured Emmanuel 11-2 at the end of a one-sided encounter.

The 2024 FCT SWAN Week, which started on Thursday with a walking/jogging exercise, concluded on Friday with a colorful gala and awards ceremony at the VIP lounge of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja. (NAN)
