“A Christmas Carol” reminds us of our power to do good

It's December, the Advent season, and it's time for another reading of A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens.

My fascination with this poignant story began the week before Christmas, when I was eight years old and NBC aired Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol for the first time. It was an animated adaptation of Dickens' classic work and began my annual re-examination of the story in various forms, including written history and numerous film versions made since 1935 featuring notables such as Seymour Hicks, Reginald Owen, Alistair Sim, George C. Scott. , Michael Caine, Patrick Stuart and Jim Carrey as Ebenezer Scrooge.

One of my favorites in recent years is the Patrick Stuart version. I like it because it takes some of Dickens' writing, often shown only as pictures in other versions.

In A Christmas Carol, as Marley's ghost emerges from Scrooges through the open window, Dickens writes: The air was full of ghosts, wandering here and there in restless haste and moaning as they departed. Each of them wore chains like Marley's Ghost; some… were linked together; none were free. Many had been personally known to Scrooge during their lives. He had known an old ghost, in a white vest, with a monstrous iron safe tied to his ankle, who cried pitifully at not being able to help a miserable woman with a child, whom he saw downstairs, on the steps of a door. The misfortune of all was clearly that they sought to interfere for good in human affairs and that they had lost power forever.

While we live, we all have the power to intervene for good, to do good in human affairs. The specters of the dead in Dickens's short story had lost this power forever and this was the source of much of their misery. It is perhaps too delicate to debate whether we will have this power after death, as do St. Teresa the Little Flower and the other saints. But our chances of exercising it after our death will be much greater if we exercised it before our death.

As we prepare for the arrival of Christ at the end times and at Christmas, consider that we can intervene for good in human affairs by supporting the work of our Catholic charitable agencies: JOIN, the St. .
