ABC agrees to give $15 million to Donald Trump's presidential library in defamation settlement | US News

ABC has settled a defamation lawsuit with Donald Trump and will pay $15 million for his presidential library.

The settlement describes the funding as a “charitable contribution” from the US network, which also agreed to pay $1 million in legal fees to the law firm of Mr Trump's lawyer, Alejandro Brito.

The complaint related to a segment on George Stephanopoulos' This Week show on March 10, in which he said Mr. Trump had been found civilly liable for the rape of writer E. Jean Carroll.

Interviewing South Carolina Republican Rep. Nancy Mace, the anchor said Mr. Trump had been “found responsible for rape” and “defamation of the victim of that rape.”

In 2023, a jury found Mr Trump responsible for sexually abusing the writer at a Bergdorf Goodman department store in New York in the mid-1990s.

The jury also found her liable for defamation after she wrote about the incident in her 2019 memoir.

Then, in a second trial in Manhattan federal court in January, Mr. Trump was found liable in additional defamation suits and ordered to pay Ms. Carroll $83.3 million.

Neither verdict involved a finding of rape under New York law, which is defined as vaginal penetration by a penis.

In upholding the first trial's ruling, U.S. District Judge Lewis Kaplan wrote that the jury found that Ms. Carroll failed to prove that Mr. Trump raped her “in the narrow, technical sense of particular section of the penal law of New York.”

Mr. Trump is appealing both verdicts and has denied his claims. He insists he did not know Ms. Carroll and never met her at the store.

As part of the settlement, ABC News included an editor's note on its original coverage of Mr. Stephanopoulos' interview, saying that he and the network “regret” those statements.

ABC must also transfer the funds to an account managed by Mr Brito's company within 10 days.

In a statement, TV station spokeswoman Jeannie Kedas said, “We are pleased that the parties have reached an agreement to dismiss the lawsuit under the terms of the court filing.”
